He was taking a leisurely walk and foraging through the flower beds at a local park. I was quite a distance but he was still skittish.

Daffodils

Creatively lit by flash from below and behind left and some fill from the right. Different I thought. And with so many daffodil photos generally taken, a new perspective (for me at least) is needed.

Sunrise Shadow

This was an interesting sunrise on the way in today, with the shadow of a mountain on the clouds. This is 2 images stitched into a panorama.

UPDATE: I believe that is the shadow of Mt. Jefferson in the Cascade Range, Oregon.

Reflections

I could not ignore the colors on the water last night. This is looking at Salem, OR from the parking lot of Lowe's towards Mission street. I had forgotten my tripod and exposure was around 5 seconds. I did have my gorillapod and strapped it to the fence....

New power supply, Photos released from hostage situation

It is amazing how the world can stop for some things when the computer breaks! All fixed now and I have a willow pic to prove it. Going strobist too. Shot in the daylight with one bare flash to the left and fast shutter speed to darken the background. I have always shot flash off camera and having wireless capabilities is awesome.

I noticed these guys pocking through last Monday, the first sign of spring. I love the crocus and they never fail to please. I am not waiting for white, blue and purple crocus, soon to follow I'm sure!

Ring Necked Phesant

This guy sat for a great pose but I have to admit, it is not in the wild. Not a zoo either but the EE Wilson Wildlife Refuge. They use these birds as breeders to help repopulate the area in some managed way. I hope it works because it is not fair to the animals. If you are in the area there is much to see there, not all penned up either.

Turkey!

This big boy looked quite menacing at the refuge last weekend. But he came right up to us and we talked quite a while. He had the sweetest little chirp. Very friendly and ate grass out of our hand. William was a tad skittish, but he did feed him.

Woodpecker at the feeder

This guy has become a regular at my back yard feeder and he is welcome. I love seeing a woodpecker. They have always alluded me and I guess that is why I highly regard them.

Both are soft, I know. Taken with the new 400 and my 2X for 800mm but with bad form on my part. I was not using a tripod but had the camera braced. Not so good.

Busy Busy Busy!

I have taken a few shots here and there but just busy. This shot is the first shot from my new lens I received by our dedicated and loyal postal carrier: Tokina 400 f4.5. This is the first image shot, hand held in my kitchen, no cropping: ISO 6400, f6.3 @ 1/160sec. Not bad, very little if any blur. (Pentax does a great job with anitishake built in!)

Give us the ball......

A pair of portraits of the dogs while playing with my new 21mm lens and in camera effects. They are cool I think. I was using a ball to keep their attention and their expressions show it!

High Surf, Oregon Coast

New Year trip to the coast for the weekend brought full moon and storms. The result is extra high tides and rough seas. It was very interesting to watch the flow and crashing of the waves on the rocks. These high waves are on the rocks of the small coastal town of Yahats. There were quite a few of us just watching Mother Nature do her thing. It was extra nice to have a little sun break to get some dramatic lighting, thus negating all other high crashing wave shots up until then. Very nice, more to come in the next few days.

Moon Setting

This shot has no special meaning other than the first edited image in Lightroom 3 beta. Great software for what it does but I find myself wanting to edit just a little of this or that using layers. I think I can do what I want to for the most part, so it is up to me to get past my knowledge limitations. Photoshop is still best for true editing.

Happy New Year

We are at the coast again, hanging out looking around between rain showers. The sun actually poked through the clouds yesterday morning and I caught these rays through the trees.

3 images put together to show a landing of an Oregon Junco at one of my bird feeders. My goal for this day was birds in flight. I think it worked out!

Not from around here!

Not sure where this little bird came from, but it sure does not belong here. Either way off his migratory track or an escapee. Either way, I hope he makes it through the winter safely.

Eagle

I caught this guy flying up a river I was getting a few shots of. Very early in the morning, so his head is not white but golden. I also had my wide lens on so this is heavily cropped but I think it came out ok enough.

Majestic Falls Ice Field

It has been cold here for a week, nights plunging to 10F or so and never above freezing. I suspect this location on McDowell Creek never even saw the sun. An amazing sight for sure, the creek totally frozen over with inches of ice. I met a couple from just up the road who commented that in 20 years of visiting Majestic Falls they have never seen it ice over. Likely, once in a lifetime. This image is 27 images stitched together making a single 81mpix image.

Here is what Majestic Falls normally looks like, from June of 08....

(More McDowell ice photos in the next couple days..... Now that the chaos of finals week at school is over!)

Blue Heron

I stalked this guy for quite a while when visiting the coast recently. He took about five more steps and took off. The Heron is just about my favorite bird these days and they are so skittish and hard to photograph without a blind of some sort.
