I wanted to photograph this flower with a little grass in the background to had it sitting ready to go. We found a caterpillar outside and I decided I need his photo too! So, I combined them! He was very photogenic and patient with me before I set him free. I added one more photo: The set up. I like to see other people's setup and I thought I would throw mine in, mess and all. There is no magic: macro lens on DSLR, tripod, remote release & 2 flash units with triggers. I'm constantly amazed how images look when I know what it looked like behind the scenes, like this one. :-) The maroon background is from a jewelry box ready to go on craigslist and the black/gray background is the back of an etch-a-sketch.

I like the behind the scenes shot a lot! Make-do is great!
ReplyDeleteThe little caterpillar looks like a very soft and spikey little critter! Adore this collection of shots and enjoyed the process of recycling props!

ReplyDeleteThat is such a clever set-up! Hmm, where is our Etch-a-Sketch? :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Perry! I still have so much to learn!

Oh wow! Great shots and a hairy little guy :D
ReplyDeletewonderful to hear your set up. I have no skill doing that. I always wait for nature to present the magic, the light, no tripod, no extra light. You are an artist.

ReplyDeleteregards
What a fuzzy little guy on such a pretty flower. Great capture!!
ReplyDeleteSniff sniff. I want a fancy camera as well.
ReplyDeleteHiya Perry,
ReplyDeleteI love it when we play about with our photo's. Your equipment looks impressive. (I echo the Sniff, sniff.) And I also enjoy 'setting the scene', but my attitude to caterpillars that defoliate my favourite plants, is slightly different.
And thanks for teaching me a new word/variation: passel.
lovely capture, perry! its so generous of you to show us your set up on this particular shot. i normally used natural light, i always position my subject by the windowsill...lol!
ReplyDeleteby the way, read your comment on dave's blog. i may start few months earlier than him in photography but believed you me, it was him who tought me most of what i knew about the craft. i find it a waste of his time sitting in front of the computer all day playing games. now, he can't get enought of sunlight and photography. he's always on the go to capture something new. hopefully, we can both attend a photography lectures, workshops and seminar in the near future as we knew this is going to be a part of our life.
i will be off the scene for a couple of weeks. I will have to undergo a major surgery soon. for now, i am busy with my still life photography to keep my blog afloat until i am up and about to do it again.
have a lovely week ahead of you!

ReplyDeletethanks for visiting! you are so generous to share us your set-up. all your shots are spectacular. the caterpillar added drama to the flower. :)
ReplyDeleteThese pictures are so spectacular and professional looking that I had to laugh at the set-up photo. Using what you have on hand is so marvelous! It makes me feel more at home, as I don't have $$ for expensive stuff. Though I am, actually drooling at your camera equipment. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteIf you hadn't shown your setup I would have been so wondering how you got that little guy to pose so beautifully. :)
ReplyDeleteExcellent shots!
Thanks for your visit and nice comment on my dragonfly.

ReplyDeletecan't decide which like the most... they're all so incredibly beautiful! A little pre-production goes a long way - background works a treat!!
